Hello and Welcome!
My name is Emily Meyers and I am an ESOL Professor at MiraCosta College and Adjunct English Professor at Southwestern College here in San Diego. I earned my M.Ed at the University of San Diego focusing on TESOL, Literacy and Culture. I was also an ESOL instructor at Education First teaching 4 courses: Intermediate General English, Intermediate Speaking and Listening, English through Modern Novels, and TOEFL Preparation. My three passions in life are learning, traveling, and educating.
Learning. I graduated from Miami University (OH) in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Sociology. I also completed a Thematic Sequence focusing on Intercultural Communication while in Differdange, Luxembourg in the summer of 2008. In 2010 I earned a 60 hour in-class TESOL/TESL/TEFL certification through Oxford Seminars. In 2013 I was accepted into the University of San Diego's Master of Education program focusing on TESOL, Literacy and Culture. In March 2015 I attended the CATESOL regional conference in San Diego with the theme of Powered Up! Although I will have completed my M.Ed by May 2015, I am a voracious learner and always welcome opportunities to further my education and knowledge.
Traveling. While studying at Miami University, I spent the summer of 2008 in Europe completing a Thematic Sequence with the focus on Intercultural Communication. Throughout this time, I visited 8 countries to broaden my knowledge of European culture and history. After graduating, I lived in Australia for a year doing private English tutoring as well as creating basic English skill classes at youth hostels. Although I lived in Melbourne for the longest period of time, I spent significant time in Perth and Port Douglas as well. When my Australian visa was completed, I accepted a position in Xi'an, China teaching English. Throughout my time in China I traveled to 13 cities to deepen my understanding of Chinese tradition, culture, and history. When my teaching contract finished, I spent a month traveling throughout Cambodia and Thailand to learn more about Southeast Asia. Since my return to the United States in 2012, I have visited 7 states and completed a cross-country road trip from Charlotte, North Carolina to San Diego, California.
Educating. My first experience teaching was through a volunteer position within an organization called "Reach Out and Read" at the Columbus Children's Hospital. I tutored patients and their families in reading skills while they waited to see a doctor. Most of the patients were English language learners who had moved to the US from Asian and African countries. This experience sparked a passion within me and was what inspired me to get my TESOL, TESL, TEFL certification. Once I completed the certification I went abroad to find a teaching position. Unfortunately, it was difficult to find a formal teaching position in Australia through their public or private school systems. Instead, I did private tutoring for a year and created basic English skill classes at hostels throughout the country. I taught beginning-level adult English language learners speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. I created classes based on the needs of the students and the surrounding area. The materials and topics used were reflective of what the students would encounter on a daily basis.
My first formal teaching position did not come about until August of 2011, when I accepted a job teaching English in Central China to children ages 3 - 12. While in China, I also tutored the professors of Economics at Xi'an's Polytechnic University in advanced speaking and listening. Upon my return to the States in 2013, I taught preschool at Kids R Kids in Charlotte, North Carolina. Within my class, I had three English language learners from Asia and Europe. I took a nine month break from teaching as I began my graduate school career, but accepted a position at Education First (EF) after I completed my first year at the University of San Diego. I have been teaching at EF since June 2014 and have taught a variety of levels and have covered a multitude of topics. I have recently created a new class at EF from scratch called "Literature Through Modern Novels". I developed the syllabus, curriculum, lessons, assessment tools, and materials myself. Additionally, I have created personalized online forums and groups through Facebook specific to each of my classes to provide continued out-of-class support for my students. You can take a look at my professional Facebook page here: Emily Meyers. Most notably, over this time I have been consistently voted one of the top three teachers (out of 22) by students based on improved language development as well as in-class and out-of-class support. This was reflected in my ranking as the #1 teacher within all West Coast EF schools.
