Findings: American Accent Group Project Worksheet
Quantitative Data.
- Students identified 3 out of the 7 different regional American accents as accents that they found attractive and would like to have. This meant that 57% of the accents presented to the students were identified as unattractive and undesirable.
Qualitative Data
- The three types of accents that the students identified as attractive were the Upper Midwestern Dialect, the Western American Accent, and the Western Regional California Accent. This shows favor toward the Midwestern and Western accents over the Northeastern and Southern accents.
- From the data, it is clear that there are recurring themes as to why the students found some accents attractive and some unattractive. However, the major divide between whether the students found the accent to be attractive and unattractive is based on whether they were able to understand the speaker.
- The majority of students cited "sounding uneducated" as a reason for why they perceived certain accents to be unattractive.
